3 reviewsI personally love libraries, and this is by far the best library in Juneau. The collection is vast, the place is never crowded (that would be almost impossible, given the size) and there are few other places you can go to get that quiet sense of being literally surrounded by knowledge.
Plus there's a little coffee spot right outside the door. That's always good.
For those who don't care for books, the online resources are also plentiful, and backed up by the kind of bandwidth you only find at a university. If there's a downside, it would be that the library hours are tied pretty closely to the university school year, so that for example the largest library in Juneau shuts down for "winter break."
This library is usually awesome, but the staff does not enforce the rules.
There are often people answering phone calls, talking loudly (even the librarians), eating, and generally being disruptive. Generally not too bad, but you get the occasional person who is oblivious and self centered.
Today there is an incredibly loud get together for highschool students going on in the main area, complete with some lady singing into A microphone, kids running around, playing tag, and being very disruptive. I realize this is a public library but it's also a university library and I pay a lot of money to go to school here. Myself and many other students expect a quit study area and are disappointed when UAS fails to enforce their own rules and allows a gathering of this sort IN A LIBRARY of all places. I wish I could attach an audio file of the noise, it is ridiculous.
The UAS Egan library has that scholarly air about it that makes it so unique among libraries. An added benefit is its magnificent collection of Native Southeast Alaskan literature. I highly recommend it's quiet atmosphere.
